Everyone Has a Part to Play

Things are quiet at home now. We’re settled in, watching football and resting, and my mind is on the events of the last 5 days, as we served in support roles for Gateway Church’s amazing theatrical production: Truthical. Based on our estimates, over 50,000 people watched the show (over the 10 presentations at the Southlake campus), and many more in the extension campuses and online. People lined up for hours before each service hoping to get a seat in the main auditorium, and many had to settle for watching on large screens in the overflow rooms.

What attracted such huge crowds? An extraordinary musical with a great, talented, dedicated cast AND a fantastic support crew. While many (no doubt) are writing wonderful reviews about what they saw on stage, I want to reflect on what I saw behind the scenes.

Of course actors, actresses and musicians all played a key role. But there was a team that wrote the play, carefully assembling dialogue, lyrics and music to convey a message. There were also choreographers and voice coaches. Another group directed the production and made sure that everything ran smoothly. The Technical Arts people managed lights, sound, and video feeds. The camera crew provided close-ups of key scenes and provided the feed for the on-screen audiences. Some were in charge of stage design, pyrotechnics, and special effects. There were those who designed and made the costumes. Another group handled hair and make-up. Others supported the supporting crew. (My friend Deb, for example, read the script for the camera operators). I was part of a small team that provided simultaneous interpretation into Spanish. But that’s not all… there were countless others who provided meals, maintained the facilities, serves as greeters and ushers, ministered at the altar, provided security, and child care, helped with parking or information. Add to these the intercessors and pastors… I’m sure even this doesn’t cover all of the countless people who worked together to make this happen.

This reminds me of Paul’s picture of the Body of Christ: “For the body does not consist of one member but of many. . . . as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.” (1 Corinthians 12:14,18).

So, who made Truthical happen? Who was instrumental in leading over 500 people to accept the gift of salvation this weekend? We all did! There are no “big” parts and “small” parts for God. He hasn’t called us all to play the same part; but we are all given a part to play, and He rejoices in our response to His call. As I heard someone say a while back: “your talents and abilities are God’s gift to you; what you do with them is your gift to God.”

I come out of this weekend with a renewed awareness of the beauty of the Body of Christ, as we come together, each valuing the gifts we have received from God, and using it to build His Kingdom.

To all who were involved in the production and presentation of Truthical I say, “Well done, Church. It is an honor to serve with you. Let’s continue building the Kingdom together.”
